Expertise: International private client.

James advises professional trustees and intermediaries in the Channel Islands, Geneva and internationally on all aspects of Jersey trust law to include the settlement, ongoing operation and restructuring of trusts. James further advises on all related company and commercial law issues.

James has also worked closely with UK law firms on the creation of family limited partnerships pursuant to the Limited Partnerships (Jersey) Law 1994.

Recent transaction highlights include:

  • Working closely with UK tax advisers in advising trust company on the formation of a Jersey family limited partnership for multiple asset classes to include advising on the rights of limited partners, the appointment of an investment advisor and the Jersey regulatory treatment. 
  • Advising trustee of a Jersey trust on a £20,000,000 loan to a family trading company to include advising on the requisite indemnities and security package.
  • Advising trustees on the restructuring of a UK based family's holding companies in connection with the demerger of one sector of its UK situate leisure and entertainment business.

In Chambers 2013 James is praised by clients for being "timely, knowledgeable, technically sound and commercial."  The Legal 500 2011/12 directory say he is "approachable and technically competent."  James has been acknowledged in the "Honours List" in the "Leading Lawyers" category in the 2012 and 2013 Citywealth Leaders List.

He is co-author of the recently published "Guidelines for Jersey Directors" published by the IoD and is a regular speaker at seminars and conferences and has recently provided seminars to Jersey based banking institutions and trust companies on the use and pitfalls of settlor directed investments.
